New "1 watt" technology to improve the energy efficiency of traffic lights has started to be installed in the Italian province of Bolzano and in Bietigheim-Bissingen, a city near Stuttgart (Germany).
A typical intersection with technology based on digital LED bulbs and around 55 traffic lights (red, yellow and green) can now avoid more than 6 thousand kilograms of carbon emissions each year, thanks to the installation of the so-called "1 watt technology" , which was presented for the first time at the 2016 Intertraffic fair in Amsterdam (Netherlands).
This technology eliminates the need for the load resistors and switching elements that were previously used in traffic light units and consumed most of the energy.
Compared to the 60 watts that the incandescent bulbs used to consume, the electricity required by each of the traffic lights can be reduced to just one or two watts, according to the Siemens company in a statement.
