The Footwear and Plastic Technology Center (CETEC), a body supported by the Ministry of Business through the Institute of Promotion of the Region of Murcia, is working on the development of the European program 'Degricol'.

The aim of this project is to find solutions for the growing consumption of plastic materials in agriculture and horticulture, which entails significant environmental and economic damage, according to sources from the regional government in a statement.

The Degricol project consists of producing a one hundred percent natural ‘bioplastic’ and with bio-surfactants to improve and control the degradation process.

This product will comply with the biodegradation and composting regulations. It should be taken into account that the agriculture and horticulture sector in Europe generates around 1.2 million tonnes of plastic waste per year, of which almost 30 percent comes from accessories such as nets and clips for plant support , plastic pots and trays for greenhouses, among others.

These are necessary materials for farmers, but which are very expensive to recycle.

Furthermore, existing biodegradable plastics do not possess the utility required by professionals in agriculture and horticulture. The main tasks of the Footwear and Plastic Technology Center are the design and implementation of developments, tailored to the demands of the company, covering areas such as automation, robotics, processes, applications and specific software.

In addition, it provides support to companies, both technically during the implementation phase and in the management to obtain aid.

It also develops technological projects of sectoral interest, with the subsequent transfer of them to Murcian firms. 15 CDTI PROJECTS Within this scope of project development, it should be noted that CETEC has managed more than 15 CDTI projects in the last four years (the entity that channels requests for financing and support for R & D & I projects of Spanish companies ), which has generated investments in innovation close to ten million euros in participating SMEs.

Likewise, this center is an active participant and collaborator in the preparation of European-wide projects, currently having the only project approved in the Region within the SME Phase II line of the Horizon 2020 operational program.

One of the advantages that associated companies have is that they have priority to participate in subsidized projects, as well as to be included in the help lines to which the center has access.

In addition, technical reports for associates are urgent and have priority over the rest.

Reservations are also established for associated companies in all training courses, forums, conferences and conferences.

They also have priority in assisting and receiving timely information. Likewise, the partners have preference in the attention of technical consultations, sometimes free of charge, and have special prices in all laboratory tests and analytics.

CETEC also offers advice for the creation and modification of company image.
